Boosting Livelihoods, Transforming Lives: Olopi Compassion Project Empowers Caregiver Groups
In July 2025, the Olopi Compassion Project made remarkable strides in empowering families through sustainable livelihood initiatives. With a key focus on strengthening caregiver groups, the project—under the long-standing partnership between ADS South Rift and Compassion International—secured funds to support two dynamic groups: one engaged in maize farming and the other in beekeeping.

Lack of sustainable livelihoods often leaves families struggling to meet basic needs such as food, healthcare, and education. For children, this translates into poor nutrition, inconsistent school attendance, and emotional distress as caregivers grapple with financial instability. Recognizing this challenge, the Olopi Compassion Project sought to offer practical solutions that would restore hope and self-reliance among caregivers.
The farming group received maize seeds, fertilizer, and support for initial ploughing of a one-acre piece of land, which they had collectively leased. Through their savings scheme, the caregivers have been able to hire casual labourers to weed and care for the maize plants—an inspiring show of teamwork, commitment and ownership.

Meanwhile, the beekeeping group received six modern beehives, with one member generously offering part of her land for installation. To ensure success, the project engaged an agricultural expert from KALRO to train members on modern beekeeping practices. Their dedication is already bearing fruit, as all six hives are now fully colonized by bees. The group anticipates their first honey harvest by January or February 2026—a milestone that promises both income and improved household nutrition.
Looking ahead, the beekeepers plan to reinvest income from honey sales to purchase additional hives and expand their venture. Both groups intend to continue with their savings and investment activities, building a culture of resilience and financial discipline.

The expected outcomes of these initiatives go far beyond financial gain. Families will have better food security and diversified income sources, while children in these households will benefit from improved nutrition, stable school attendance, and reduced vulnerability.

Through such initiatives, the Olopi Compassion Project continues to demonstrate how sustainable livelihoods can restore dignity and hope within communities. The unwavering partnership between ADS South Rift and Compassion International remains a beacon of transformation—empowering families today for a brighter, more secure tomorrow.
